The Marble Falls High School boys soccer team stomped Austin KIPP 6-0 Jan. 24 after losing to Austin Bowie 1-0 Jan. 22.

The Mustangs (5-4-1) raced to a 4-0 lead at the half against KIPP en route to the victory.

Senior Marco Almazan scored on an assist from junior Joaquin Aguilar to begin the scoring. Then sophomore Esteban Dominguez scored two goals thanks to an assist from seniors Rigo Lopez Valverde and Coda Langley. Freshman Eli Chocoj scored on a penalty kick.

Almazan added a second goal on another Aguilar assist then returned the favor when he found Aguilar for a goal.

“We came out with a sense of urgency that we didn’t against Bowie,” head coach Ryan Craven said. “That was pretty good. Our warm-up was better with more intensity. That helped us a lot, too.”

He noted that KIPP and Marble Falls have had some battles. Two years ago, the two teams split the series. The Cardinals prevailed 2-1 and the Mustangs returned the favor 4-2 a month later.

But this year, the Mustangs didn’t let the Cardinals come close.

“We got to more balls in the air,” Craven said. “Our set pieces were working properly.”

With the lopsided score at the half, coaches substituted freely, including the three goalies.

“We played a lot of our guys, who don’t play a lot,” Craven said. “There wasn’t a drop-off; that was good to see.”

Marble Falls welcomes Belton Tuesday, Jan. 26, with the first junior varsity playing at 4:15 p.m., the second junior varsity at 5:30 p.m., and the varsity at 7 p.m.
